FAN: Is Korky Back?

Mrs. Fan and Still A Stroke are out of town for the weekend so I went out to eat last night by myself. Sad I know, but I was running errands and had to drive by Outback so I went in and ate at the bar. There is nothing that a rare filet, a slice of Key Lime pie and a couple of beers can't fix. I looked up at one of the TVs at the bar and did a "Jon Lovitz in A League of their Own" doubletakes when he sees the homely girl up close. I swear Kordell 'Korky' Stewart was on ESPN the deuce talking about college football. There was no volume, it was loud in there and it wasn;t on long so maybe I was dreaming. A quick look at Wikipedia shows nothing that he is currently employed by the deuce, although he did do some college stuff for them last January. If he was just hired, I guess too many people aren't scrambling to update his Wikipedia page. Fifty bucks says he updates his own page. I never hated Kordell, I actually liked him. He just got to a certain point as a quarterback and couldn't progress past it. That's not his fault. Too many coaches. Too many OC's. Too many square peg in a round hole guys messing with him. Who knows what he could have been with a team built to feature him at QB. Anyway.....am I nuts or did I see him and that big thing on his neck talking about football?

Kordell Stewart vs. Joes

I've become a fan recently of Pro's Vs. Joe's on Spike TV. It pits retired athletes against common Joe's who think they can compete with the big boys. While watching a rerun this week, I caught Kordell Stewart's appearance. The Joes had to try to stop Kordell from making a throw into 1 of 4 targets. Kordell couldn't throw the pass until the ref's second whistle and it put on display his ability to avoid being sacked. Also, without having to read a defense.....it showed he really did have a decent arm as he continously hit the targets while moving in the pocked. True, the targets were stationary, but he did a decent enough job. He was even funny in taunting the Joe's by doing Ray Lewis' dance, Deion Sanders' dance and taking a nap on the ball (was that TO or Chad?). The thing that really sparked my interest was a commercial for this Thursday's new episode where Slash is back for another round. He gets into a fight with a contestant and it looks like it's going to come to blows. I'm wondering what was said to aggrevate him that much? I'm betting it's a gay reference and I can't wait to see the episode. The taunting almost goes too far. Some idiot threw a basketball at Tim Hardaway after he got his ass handed to him in a game of 1-on-1. Claude Lemieux took care of him in the next round by hitting him in the face with a hockey stick. With all the garbage that's on TV, PVJ is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

DUHbury Mint!

So I go out to the mailbox today to see what's inside and I received two Steeler items. The first was an autographed card of Tim Worley that I purchased from a dealer for a whopping $2.00. No, I'm not a huge fan of his, I just needed him for my collection. The second item was a mailing from the Danbury Mint to inform me that they have commissioned a set of 22 kt gold plated...I'm sorry...a SHIMMERING set of 22kt gold plated player cards with the logo for Super Bowl XL on them - not to mention a collector's book to keep them in. No mention of "rich, Corinthian" leather so I'm assuming it's "pleather". While I wasn't interested in the cards, I thought I would go to their website to see what other Steeler items they might have. They have a series of figures starting at $79.99. The list of players forever cast as Danbury Mint "worthy" are Big Ben, Bettis, Jack Lambert, Mike Webster, Franco, Joe Greene, the Linebacker Collection which is one base with Lambert, Ham and Russell together, the Steel Curtain Collection which is one base with Greene, Holmes, Greenwood and White together - and the most conspicuous figure of all - Kordell Stewart? Are you kidding me? I mean, I loved the kid in the early years and I supported his first 2 years as the starter. After that, maybe Cowher should have cut his losses and forced him to be a kick returning slot receiver or leave. I thought there were too many cooks in the kitchen also as Cowher stayed with him but his coaches continued to change. Well, we all know how that movie ended so there is no use opening old wounds. The only thing I can say with certainty is that there are no fewer than 186 former Steelers who deserve to be "preserved" forever as a DM figurine more than Kordell. Wow, did they jump the gun with that one or what? I wonder if the guy who made that call is still working there? Can you imagine that meeting in 1998: "Hey, I know it would be great to add Swann, Stallworth or Blount to the Steeler line, but I really feel strongly about this kid Stewart and I think we should add him to the line as soon as possible." DUH!
