Ok, so we already know who made me randy back when I was 12 from the first list I compiled. If you missed that, check back in the archives. Last night as I was waiting for Entourage to start, I started thinking about the art of the 30 minute sitcom. It's a dead art as far as I'm concerned. The last sitcom I watched on a regular basis was The King Of Queens, and I stopped watching it at least 2 years ago. Some people will say Will & Grace was good, and it may have been compared to what else is on right now, but it could never stand up to the classics. The following list is my top 10 favorite sitcoms of all-time. They may be critically acclaimed or guilty pleasure lame, but they are my favorites. The one rule is that I had to have seen these shows in their prime...not reruns.
1. Cheers - There's not even a close second. When I was in highschool, I would leave my girlfriend's house early to come home and watch this because her family didn't watch it. In college my crew would get together to watch the happy hour double shot of Cheers at 6:00 and 6:30 every night after dinner. It was a ritual. The last few years had a few clunkers thrown in there, but for my money, it was the best.
2. MASH - I used to watch this with my dad before I even realized why half the stuff was funny. Once I got older, while new episodes were still being cranked out, I found that I prefered the original cast with Colonel Henry, Trapper and Frank. Classic.
3. All In The Family - Again, I was young when this was in it's prime - but I did watch it. I watched it just as much in reruns and I still enjoy it today on occassion.
4. Frasier - Smart writing. Very smart writing. I don't care what the critics were saying towards the end, I still loved it. Niles Crane is one of the best sitcom characters of all time.
5. Taxi - Not sure how it holds up because I haven't seen a rerun in a long time. I just remember how funny it was. Jim Ignatalski taking the driver's exam is my favorite episode.
6. Married With Children - Al Bundy = My Hero
7. Friends - Complete guilty pleasure. Chandler used to crack me up and the longer the show was on, the more I appreciated Joey. Plus, 2 of the three babes were "hubba hubba" and it was one of the few shows my wife and I actually watched together.
8. The Simpsons - This was a must watch for me the first 6-7 years it was on. Sunday nights however became a bad night for me for tv and I starting choosing NFL games over The Simpsons. I never really went back and have seen only a handful of newer episodes in the last 7-8 years.
9. Seinfeld - I know. I'm not even sure it should be #9 on my list. I liked it, but I didn't think it was anywhere close to Cheers, MASH or All in the Family. I never bought into the whole "show about nothing" thing. Every episode had a plot. The "nothing" thing was a line of BS.
10. Murphy Brown - Completely underrated in my opinion. Maybe it should be higher on my list. I loved this show. Miles was a classic character. When it jumped the shark though, it really jumped with the young anchor. Yuck.
11. Just Shoot Me
12. Newsradio
13. Larry Sanders Show
14. Soap
15. The Jeffersons
16. Sanford & Son
17. WKRP
18. Mork & Mindy
19. Spin City
20. All the cheesey ones I watched but won't admit (Growing Pains, Family Ties.....)
Rats...I forgot Night Court....It's somewhere between 14-19!
