Idol Gives Back: Circular Logic?

My family watched American Idol's special event "Idol Gives Back" last night. My daughter was excited because Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood were going to be on and perform. They showed clips throughout the night of kids in Africa who are starving and dying from malaria. As it turns out, a $10 mosquito net can save 5 lives. At one point in the show they said enough nets could save over a million lives per year. Now, don't think I'm not sensitive to the subject because my daughter got online and we made a donation....and this is basically me trying to be funny.....but if they don't have enough food now and people are dying all over the continent from starvation - aren't the 1,000,000 people saved from the mosquito nets just adding to the food shortage? Sorry. Trust me, if Sam Kinison was alive and still doing stand-up, I'm sure he'd point that out as well ("see this? it's sand......."[start at the 4:00 mark]). I know the real solution is to have enough money so that nobody dies from a mosquito bite or malaria. It's sad, but equally sad were the clips of kids right here in the US with some of the same issues. As bad as the little girl felt who's mother works three jobs and they still can't pay all the bills, I don't think she'd trade places with one of the kids in Africa for two seconds! Seeing the clips is much worse than just reading about the poverty level there. Try explaining to a seven-year-old that being born in the USA is like hitting the life lottery. "Why don't they have enough food?" is a very valid question and a very hard one to answer. I'm not sure I did a good job of answering it last night.
