Is Smarmy A Word?

I am so sick of this idiot on Football Night in America. The Steelers were off today so I had a fun day alone with my daughter as mom recovered from hosting 11 people last night. We went bowling, then went to the bookstore, then went to Dairy Queen and finally the mall. Anyway - I missed everything that happened in the NFL today. I would just like to see some clips and be updated on what happened today. I don't need this idiot trying out his stand-up routine every week. It's not 1988. He's over. It's old. Bob Costas looks at Keith like a sick puppy dog and guffaws at everything he says which just makes it worse. Then after showing a clip where one of the Bears loses his pants during a tackle, Cris Collinsworth asks both Tiki Barber and The Bus if they ever plaed commando. Riveting. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where highlights can be had without smart-ass comments?

Sorry Buddy. No can do. Maybe this will help?

Since I did not have a committment to watch the Steelers. I used my day scouting two of our upcoming opponents in person. The Baltimore Ravens and the St. Louis Rams.

Let me tell you, not since the 1968 Pittsburgh Steelers under Bill Austin have I been in a football stadium with a more ineptitude. I am speaking of the St. Louis Rams. They were like a circus. Offsides, delay of game, twelve men in the huddle. You name the penalty, they did it. On top of that they missed easy FGs (less than 35 yards from the middle of the field). They wasted Time-Outs. And then there was the normal missed tackles, missed blocking assignments, etc. ad nauseum. Gus Ferrote was putrid at QB which means he was just a little worse than his Raven counterpart, Kyle Boller. If they win more than 2 games this year, I will be surprised.

As for the Ravens, they were not playing well at all but it didn't matter. The Rams were no match for NFL caliber competition of any level today. Steelers should be able to handle them both.

As for the rest of the league I can only tell from what I saw on the Jumbotron highlights but...

Green Bay and Washington are real close in talent and ability.

Bears suck. They lost on a last second FG of 55 yards after a big KO return by Minnesota's #1 pick, Adrian Peterson. This was a division game they had a pretty commanding lead in and pissed it away.

Marvin Lewis has lost his team out in Cincy. KC kicked their asses and Larry Johnson had a big day. By the time we get the Bung-holes they should lay down and play dead.

The Cleveland Browns certainly seem to be able to put points up on the board lately. I don't understand how trading Charlie Frye made that much difference but it surely has.

New England reminds me of the 1969 Minnesota Vikings who tore trough the league all season. No, they weren't undefeated. They lost their opener to the Giants and then won 12 straight. Then rested their starters in a meaningless game at the end which they lost. But in between they clobbered every team they faced pretty much. They beat the Baltimore Colts (who had a powerhouse lineup in 1969) 52-14 in week 2 and never looked back. They annihalated the Cleveland Bowns (a division champion that year) 51-3. And 2 weeks later beat the Stillers 52-14. Only the Roman Gabriel and Fearsome Foursome led Los Angeles Rams were considered any match for them; much like the Indianapolis Colts are now considered the only team with a chance to beat the Patriots. But they whipped the Rams by a TD in the regular season and again by a FG in the playoffs. They faced the Browns in the NFL championship game (this was the last year before the merger) and beat them again by 3 TDs. Then, they got to the Super Bowl and folded like a house of cards vs. the KC Chiefs. Hank Stram devised a masterful game plan and his boys "matriculated the ball down the field" on the Purple Gang. And that's what the Patriots look like to me. A great team all season but there's a coach out there waiting to make a name for himself who is going to take on the Mighty Belichick Cheating Machine and bring it to it's knees. The only question is: Which coach is it going to be????

OK that's week 6 in a nutshell. Bye week over, back to the Still mill.

Also, anybody out there know if they are selling "NEUTER VICK" t-shirts in other NFL cities or if it's just the smartest thing the Baltimorons have ever done? They were right next to the "Steelers Suck" shirts and didn't look like anybody was buying either one.

I'm a Steelers fan, and yesterday being bye week, I did what stilladog did and watched some other games and commentary to at least keep up with how division teams were playing and all that. Needless to say, I couldn't agree more with you. KO's "worst person in football"... is that a weekly segment?

I dig Bob Costas and Jim Nantz (for some reason I'd rather hear what they have to say than a washed-up pro)but the round-table sections at half time and during game breaks are very tedious and generally don't speak to the casual fan or someone who doesn't care about any team but the Steelers (me).

Anyway, I like your blog, keep up the good work. I wrote something a little similar a few months back. Check it out at my site here: CLICK.

Keep it up!
