Songs Cover Bands Shouldn't Play

Well, if you watch the mash-up below of Rush's Red Barchetta, you will see that when it ends there is a trail of other Rush related material on YouTube. I couldn't help but notice the one by the cover "band". I had to watch it. Admittedly, they look a little young, and I give them props for even trying to cover Rush, but my goodness. They were practicing this for a Battle of the Bands. I'm thinking maybe they should stick to something a little easier to cover. Even if they get points for level of difficulty, they are going to lose. I'll hand out some grades:

Bass: B+ Not a bad job.
Guitar: C-
Guitar Player Theatrics: D+
Drums: D- I lost count of how many times he lost count!
Vocals: F Brutal dog, just brutal.
Vocalist Theatrics: F-

In high school my cover band "Meltdown" tried to play Iron Maiden's "Run To The Hills". Our singer couldn't sing it so we shitcanned it....which is exactly what this band should do with 'Red Barchetta"! People listening to cover bands would much rather hear an easy or medium song done well than a hard song done poorly. To make matters worse, most people that don't play in a band have no idea what constitutes hard or easy. They aren't going to say "They aren't every good but that's a hard song." They're going to say "Man, they suck!" I'm thinking my rate a cover band could be a regular column!

In High School my band was dying to play anywhere. A talent show was being held by the school's Ebony Club (can you guess what they had in common?) so we signed up. We were planning to play "Heaven and Hell" by Black Sabbath. Our singer always sang through a little guitar amp, so we never could really hear him. We got to do a rehearsal before the show and finally heard what he sounded like on that track. We hastily switched to a Motorhead song which better fit his vocal ("The Chase Is Better Than The Catch"). We still lost.
