All he did was come in as an undrafted free agent and do everything that was asked of him from returning kicks to trying to inject some life into the short yardage offense. He was not great at either of those things but he was the best we had on a Super Bowl team at them. Why was Russell cut ahead of Gary Davis? So, what does this mean?
Here's the Steel City Slant on this situation. First and foremost, no matter if you scored a TD in the Super Bowl or not, if Mike Tomlin has plans that don't include you for whatever reason, you are gone. Secondly I'd look for a fullback type to be drafted at some point who will both replace Russell and beat out Davis. If you're a gambler, you may want to pre-order your Frank "The Tank" Summers t-shirts and jerseys now
Next weekend's draft will be very interesting. The Steelers under Mike Tomlin are very unpredictable in the personnel department. But I believe in Mr. T, and I think Kevin Colbert will go get him what he needs.
Bye-bye Gary Russell, thanks for all you did for the Steelers. Best of luck wherever you end up.

Wow. Why before camp? Interesting. Maybe he had a roster bonus?
