Guilty Pleasure

Yes, I know...it's a guilty pleasure. I like American Idol. I have to admit it. I've watched most of all 5 seasons. My daughter loves it and it's the only show on TV that the three of us watch together. I watch very few shows besides AI with The Sopranos, Entourage and The Apprentice time permitting but it has sucked recently. I had Taylor Hicks nailed as the next AI from his first audition until the finals were set and then I thought either Taylor or Chris Dougherty would win. Congrats to the Soul Patrol. Now I need my daughter to quit teasing me and saying my hair matches Taylor's. What she doesn't know is that she has my family genes and we all go gray early! Since I like The Blues, I'm inclined to think I may actually purchase some of Taylor's work if he goes that route. He has the voice for it, that's for sure and he's from the dirty south.

Never admit to watching American Idol. This is trash television at it's hideous worst.

Might as well post to the blog that you still play with toy soldiers. Even that would be cooler than watching American Idol.

It's OK for your daughter. She's young and doesn't know any better. But you're losing street cred.

You're right. Taylor has a good voice for blues or straight ahead rock. But once the music machine that controls American Idol gets ahold of him his albums will contain nothing but show tunes and Barry Manilow covers for the rest of his life. OK, maybe an occasional Carpenters tune too.

Is Paula Abdul America's Skank or what?

Soul Patrol! I too love Taylor's raspy voice (and yes, I too love American Idol). I'm so glad he won over Katharine, who seemed to have no real passion when she sang. At least Elliot, Paris, and Chris D had passion. I was hoping for a Chris/Taylor showdown, but at least one of them got thru...

I'll agree with the previous comment that Paula is strange...but she does provide good comedy relief (and good fodder for Howard Stern the next day..."was she drunk or what?")

Now, about this genetic penchant for going gray early. Nonsense. I have no gray hairs at all. Really. Honest. And it only costs me a small fortune every few weeks to prove it.

Dunno Anon,

Kelly Clarkson escaped from Idol's control and has found success. I don't think Taylor will do what he doesn't want to. He sees too passionate about it. I can see him having a Michael McDonald type LP or something right off the bat. I can also see him being a Jeff Healey clone.

Plus - it's as much about it being family entertainment for me. It's rare that a family can watch the same show!

Still A.,

How many Kelly Clarkson CDs in your collection?

Michael McDonald would be Ok but he'd be much better off following his heart than the almighty dollar.

Jeff Healey? Taylor ain't blind. And he don't have near the chops on his harp that Healey has on guitar or his trumpet either. Yeah Healey is an accomplished trumpet player too. You ain't heard? Healey plays dixieland jazz now. Lost his recording contract doing blues-rock and went off in another direction. As close to Healey as Taylor could come is being cast as the new bandleader in Road House II when they make it. He'd actually be good at that.
