They Are Who We Thought They Were

Wow. I mean I expected to win, but geez. The Bengals are in complete disarray. They need to fire several people and I fear the head coach might be one of them. Maybe he can come back to Pittsburgh if LeBeau retires anytime soon. Some random thoughts from the game:

When the announcers said at the very beginning of the game that the fumbled snap was a product of the bye week, I say patooties. They still practiced the entire week leading up to the game. They are professionals. They've been snapping and accepting snaps for a long time.

When the announcers said Bruce Arians' offense has evolved, I was thinking, "evolved into what exactly?" I love how they wait for a 39 yard play before they say that. If Hines is tackled right after the catch, does he make the same comment?

I forget who said it, but after an immediate hit of a returner by Ryan Clark, the one announcer made a comment about the Steelers always being good in the kicking game. Huh? What? Are you shitting me? Has he watched this team the last 4 years, cause I have. This is the first year in a long time that I haven't been holding my breath on every kick...and I'm not completely past it yet.

Najeh makes me nervous catching kickoffs. Do you see how high he catches it before tucking it away?

That rookie Rivers got welcomed to the NFL bigtime courtesy of Hines Ward. He'll never do that again without looking around. I think having Hines out there is enough to make those guys nervous on plays like that.

It took 5 guys to tackle Heath Miller. I think Heath and Spaeth are the best 1-2 TE combination in the league. Also, if that announcer said "Two Tights" one more time I was going to throw something through my new TV.

Mewelde Moore may be the free agent pickup of the year for any team in the league. had they not signed him, where would we be?

I've seen maybe 20 games where Leftwich has QB'd. Has he always had that big and slow of a windup, or was it more pronounced today?

Did you see Carson Palmer on the sidelines? He's a young man and he already looks like a 45-year old science teacher. He's like Phil Mickelson. When Phil was 27 he looked 40. Damn! As I get closer to 40 I pay a lot of attention to those things!

You know, I have to agree with you ... national announcers are terrible. If there is one bad thing about having my HDTV and HD cable (and this may be the ONLY bad thing), it's that I can't tune in to the local guys anymore. Can't tell you the number of times I've yelled at the TV because of it ...

I agree too...after watching two rounds of ALCS playoffs on TBS, I would have paid decent $$ to have Don Orsillo and the Rem Dawg do the announcing locally. No one else understands Boston fans...we need to be loved and we take everything personally!

I'll comment on the Red Sox fans first then move on to answering your questions. You already know I think the vast majority of NFL announcers are fools which they prove week after week.

What I don't understand about Boston fans is how they seem great for the Celtics, yet are little assholes when rooting for the Red Sox, and are complete assholes when rooting for the Patriots. Aren't these essentially the same sports fans??

Nobody, including Arians himself, and especially Mike Tomlin nor Ben Roethlisberger, knows what Arians offense has evolved into. Furthermore nobody knows if what it has evolved into is what it was supposed to be!

Coverage units are much improved. But you weren't watching football the past 5 years if you think it's always been this good. Return game still needs LOTS of work though.

That boy Rivers has a jaw broken in two places and a couple missing teeth. Ed Reed still wears a tampon on game day on account of the hit Hines laid on him last year. Hines Ward is a bad MF and I want people to acknowledge it! He's a mushroom-cloud-layin' MFer, MFer. Guns of the Navaronne!

I wouldn't go so far as to say Miller and Spaeth are the best 1-2 TE combination in the league. Spaeth drops way too many balls to warrant serious consideration.

Mewelde Moore would be somewhere other than Pittsburgh or Minneapolis if we hadn't signed him. Tomlin's had his eye on Moore for a while. When he had a chance to get him he took him. Us fans might be surprised at how good Moore is but Mike Tomlin is not.

Yes, Leftwich has always had that "wind-up" delivery. It's a big reason he was available for us to sign. He's as tough as nails though.

Did not see Carson Palmer on the sideline since the game was not televised in either of my nearby TV markets. He does look as though he has aged beyond his years. I suggest it is his penchant for cornholing which is at the root of this premature aging. Perhaps it deteriorates his eyesight and causes hair to grow on the palms of his hands too? Naaah. They'd call him Hairy Palmer if it did that.

Tomlin said the key difference between this years team and last years is depth. I totally agree. I can't ask anything more from Moore. He has performed beyond expectations! Amazing effort by those backups who have stepped up for us. Our special teams coverage has improved too but I hate Santonio returning. Davenport has done an okay job but he's no threat to go all the way like Randle El was. I'd like to see Davenport bulk up more and be used at the goal line. Arians still frustrates me. How come we don't see any trickery or are the Steelers saving that for later in the season? All in all no one can argue with 5-1. We are winning the games we are supposed to win. That's vital. I'd welcome Marvin Lewis back here in a heartbeat.

Jet, we don't see any trickery or any logical plan from Arians because he doesn't have a logical plan. Logical plans include situations in which trick plays can be used to exploit the opponent. Shit, Arians doesn't even have a plan, logical or illogical.

He has put together lots of good plays in his offensive playbook. But he has not a single clue as to how or when to use them. Nor does he have any idea with what personnel they would be most effective.

I would not want Marvin Lewis back in Pittsburgh. Because that would mean Dick LeBeau got run over by a truck. On all other points you are spot on.
