What the F? I live close enough to New Jersey that I have to venture into it every once in a while. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that New Jersey leads the nation in suicides! The roadways are SO screwed up, it is UNbelievable. In 1991 I had to learn about "jug handles" when I first moved out this way. Then, it seemed like every mile I had to stop and throw change into a collection bucket. George Carlin once said you should give New Jersey a blank check when you enter and just let them fill in a number when you leave. My trip this week to the most northern part of New Jersey has left me flabbergasted when I attempt to go anywhere. I am right on highway 17 above route 80 and of course...you can't cross it anywhere. My hotel is on one side and I come home on the other side of the highway. I have to PASS my hotel and travel about 2 miles up to the next U-Turn so I can turn around to come back. After I do that, when coming down the side I am staying on, I have to cross over a merge lane to make a right into my hotel. The first time I attempted that - I couldn't get over and I had to then do a U-Turn to go north again - so I could make a U-Turn to go south again. Does that make sense? So, tonight - coming back from dinner, I mistakenly took the U-Turn 2 miles BEFORE my hotel because they all look so similar. I had to then follow U-Turn signs through a neighborhood in order to travel south to the next U-Turn, in order to go north, in order to PASS my hotel and take the correct U-Turn to go south...and then risk my life making the right between people driving 70 mph coming off an exit ramp. Don't get me wrong - I'm a very agressive driver and I usually excel in situations like that - but clearly....clearly...New York drivers easily win the most agressive drivers contest. I tried to imagine a 70 year-old grandma or even my wife trying to make the right I needed to make. It's insane! Put in some goddamn turning lanes! Sheesh! One wrong turn can cost you 20 minutes.
