A Few Of My Least Favorite Things
While losses like the ones we've suffered recently used to drive me completely crazy and cause me to be of surly disposition - the older (and wiser) I get, I tend to be much more analytical instead of getting my panties in a bunch. There is zero chance that the Steelers will add a 6th ring this February. Zero. There's no use even entertaining those thoughts any longer. I was thinking after the first half against the Pats that we could trade blows with them and eventually punish the QB. I was wrong. You can't punish what you can't get to....and we can't get to the opposing QB to save our lives. So, after losing to the Pats, what could get us back on track better than a smack down of our old division mates, Jacksonville. They're a tough physical team but lead by a guy starting his first full season. To see the weather forecast for Sunday made me smile. How could any team come here and win in the snow? It doesn't happen. Usually when the Steeler's backs are up against the wall, they come out fighting. We never get "out-physical'd" two weeks in a row. Never. Not when we're supposedly in the mix for the Bowl. Right now, we can't do three things very well that are essential to any Super Bowl run. First and foremost, we can't protect our quarterback very well. Sean Mahan has been a huge disappointment so far to me. Jeff Hartings was a Pro Bowl center, even when he didn't make the Pro Bowl. A lot of times this year Ben has to move quickly from pressure right up the middle. It's disappointing to say the least. Marvel Smith is losing his edge as an end and there isn't a real answer on the other side. Faneca is leaving after the year which means it could get worse before it gets better. We can't touch the other quarterback on the other side of the ball. When we try and don't get there, our secondary gets picked apart. Maybe it's time to see what the youngsters can do form the OL position. Third (and not last) we got pushed around on defense again yesterday. Other teams are running on us late in the season when they couldn't early in the season. What's that tell me? We should have been better yesterday with Troy back, but we weren't. He had a few submarine tackles that saved yardage, but from him and especially Anthony Smith, I need to see more tackling...wrapping players up and actually tackling them. Smith was also exposed by the Pats and will now be taken deep the rest of the year and in the playoffs. Now that Jacksonville passed us for the 3rd seed and we're tied with Cleveland record-wise in our own division, it's not going to get any better. It's going to get worse. They smell the roses and we're trying to fight our way out of a funk. Playing a healthy Rams team away and the hated Ravens in Baltimore for a chance to knock us down another peg and end their season on a high note - I could see us losing the last two as easily as winning them. If we come out and reestablish what we do well and crush these next two teams, maybe we can go into the playoffs with some confidence. If we limp in, we might not even win a playoff game, let alone make a run for the Championship.

You're right, we have no chance to do much in January. I keep looking for a sign. A catalyst moment or game that will fuse the team into a single unit and carry us into the post-season. But it isn't forthcoming.
Looks like we're now offically a team in transition from Cowher Power football to I-don't-know-what Tomlin football. Whatever Tomlin's goal is, it doesn't appear to be classic Steeler football as we know it. Oh he talks a good game at the press conferences. But the effort his team puts out on the field falls way short of what we're used to. As he says, "We are what we put on tape."
I'm not going to judge him too harshly just yet. 9-5 is not a bad start for a rookie head coach. I will withold my bitching and ranting at least until after the draft. I want to see what kind of personnel moves get done this off-season first.
Looking forward to '08 I will pay particular attention (in no particular order) to the following:
Dan Kreider is gone who replaces him, Russell/FA/draft pick?
Tuman is gone who replaces him? Does it even matter?
How fast is Ariens fired following the season?
Who is Offensive Coordinator?
What other assistants are shown the door?
Who in the world can we sign in free agency or draft to plug all 5 of the holes we have in our offensive line (yes, I realize there are only 5 offensive line positions)?
Are Woodley and Timmons players or not?
Can Willie Reid have another chance, please?
Will Anthony Smith ever learn how to play safety? Never thought I'd say this but I miss Ryan Clark!
Can William Gay please get a chance to challenge McFadden and DeShea for a starting job. He just makes plays and is ALWAYS around the ball.
Where are the pass rushers? Get us some-- might already have them if Timmons and/or Woodley pan out.
Find the eventual replacement for Aaron Smith. He's getting long in the tooth and Jacksonville ripped us a brand new bleeding anus in the run game without him on Sunday.
Maybe a WR or 2 who can actually catch the ball too.
Willie Parker will be fine if the O-line gets its needed upgrade. But finding a big bruising short yardage back who can move a pile would compliment him immensely.
Short list is we don't have to worry about a QB (unless he gets killed in the next 2 games behind this line) and a Kicker or punter. But just about every other position could stand some new blood in some way shape or form.
Can't solve all the problems in one year but the honeymoon for Tomlin is offically over. It's on him exclusively from here on out. We'll see how he responds.
What a disappointment. One thing to consider...the Steelers played some weak teams earlier in the season. Perhaps we thought our team was better than they actually were? The Jags are a good team. Very good. If I was New England or Indy I'd be scared shitless right now because Jacksonville is a very physical team that WILL be able to run against the Pats old defense. Playing in cold weather is no problem for the Jags either so I fully expect them to make a solid deep run in the playoffs.
Can't ask anything more from Ben. He's basically keeping us in games by himself. Yeah our O-line is sucking but we're scoring enough points to win games. I put the full blame on our defense. Absolutely no pressure when they blitz and even when they don't the other team can STILL complete passes at will. Our defense just plain sucks. #1 in the NFL? Absurd. The Jets (The Jets!) moved on us at will. We have no personailty or fire at all and no leader on defense! Maybe it's time for younger guys to get a chance? Put Timmons in there and Woodley.
A NFL team is only as good as their last game so hopefully we can still turn it around by winning the last two games and then we'll go from there. Right now the Stillers have zero personality or identity. We're tied with Cleveland but that's a hungry team that wants to win bad. Much more than we seem to want to win;-( Another thing to consider...Tomlin is a rookie too so he's gonna make mistakes. So is Arians. Hopefully they will learn from their mistakes. The one thing I can't understand is why the Rooney's don't bring in more free agents? Can you imagine if we signed some one like Jamal Lewis? Why did we not go after him? Instead we went after Kevin Barlow! Why don't the Steelers ever sign any known free agents? Look at the impact free agents have had on New England this season.
good points, all.
JT, i believe the rooney's logic on big name free agents goes something like this:
we've won 5 out of 41 super bowls and have been to a 6th without doing this. why change now?
i realize free agency didnt exist for the first 4, but they have always built their team through the draft. it's just the M.O. and I dont see it changing.
i'm trying to think of the biggest name they've brought in and i can't come up with one. it's always a better than average guy who gets better while he's here...
hartings, ryan clark, farrior, deayne washington (shudders), ericc pegram, kimo.
kevin greene was probably the last pro bowler and that was almost 15 years ago....unless i'm forgetting somebody obvious.
JT, Arians is no rookie coordinator. He sucked as OC for the Browns. He sucked as Head Coach of the Temple Owls. The TEMPLE OWLS fired him!!! Worst football team in Div I - for years.
His claim to fame is he worked with Peyton Manning early in Peyton's pro career.
He hasn't put together a bad offense. But his pussified, grab bag, and assoholic in-game play calling wrecks whatever good he contributes. He waits until the most crucial time to call the stupidest play in the game plan. Part of that is on Tomlin for allowing him to continue this trend too.
You are right, I forgot that. I have been frustrated with the offensive play calling lately too. But I want to give both Tomlin and Arians time to learn according to what they've got to work with here in Pittsburgh. It's gonna take time to gel so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Perhaps the players just aren't buying into Tomlin and Arian's schemes quite yet? We have alot of weapons on offense but the play calling seemed to be working better earlier in the season unless that's just because we were playing weaker teams then? I dunno?
As far as free agents go, I still say we need them. It blows my mind how the Pats were able to bring in four relatively big name free agents in one freaking season and we can't ever do it. Look at how it's paying off for New England and how Jamal Lewis is paying off for the Browns, and T.O. for Dallas. We're missing key ingredients this season to challenge for that 6th ring. I wanna see it addressed in the off-season. O-Line is a major priority. We also need a big bruising powerback that can close out games and pound the ball in the end zone like Bettis did. I love Davenport but he's not the man for that job. I noticed recently that if it's 3rd or 4th and short that our team doesn't even have enough confidence to run the ball! We have no confidence in our o-line at all! I also wanna see someone with firepower added on defense. We have no attitude. I'd like to see the Rooney's open up their wallets more.
We'll see what happens tonight. If the Steelers don't win this game, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs. Period.
