From the Hall of Fame: Never use a petroleum product on your grill unless you want your meat to taste like kerosine/gasoline/lighter fluid.

For Charcoal use a starter and some newspapers. Wal-Mart has 'em for under $10. _a

Believe it or not, a similar thing happened in our 'hood about 7 years ago. Some neighbors were doing their spring cleanup in their yards, mowed their lawns for the first time, and had piled all the clippings into a pile. I'm certain that a few cold ones had been consumed at some point, and one guy decided to douse the pile with gasoline. They doused it good. When they went to ignite it, it blew up in their faces. Serious injuries to both. Life flighted to Boston. Both recovered, but they're probably still missing eyebrows and arm hairs. They were wrapped for months.
