Thank goodness we Pirate fans have plays like this to bring up for discussion. We have to live in the past. There is no present and doesn't appear to be much of a future either.

I can still see that play at the plate in my minds eye. Bowa's description of the play was only slightly exaggerated. The ball traveled on a dead rope no more than 8 feet off the ground at any point but most certainly did not travel the 300-some feet at waist height. I remember being awestruck as they showed the play over and over.

Before we become too stiff and erect over Dave Parker, I'd remind all the youngsters that Roberto Clemente made those kind of outfield assists commonplace when he roamed right field. Just very little TV coverage and certainly wasn't any Sports Center to show them off like today.

One of his patented moves was to gun a man down who took a wide turn at first on a single to right. Clemente would throw behind the runner before he could return safely to the bag.

It was a blessing to see Clemente play at both Forbes Field and Three Rivers.
