The Carolina Panthers signed DeShaun Foster to a 3 year contract minutes before free agency started last night. They paid him 14.5 million dollars for 3 years. Now, before I tell you what he did to earn that money - you have to get over your infatuation with the name "DeShaun Foster". I play fantasy football and if you read the magazines and articles associated with the game, Foster is usually a highly regarded back. Here is my guarantee to you - had Foster reached the free agent market - he would have never seen 14.5 million for 3 years. This is why the Steelers will always win at the cap game. The Panthers saw Foster as a must have...someone who they could not do without. They hit the panic button. There are a ton of free agent running backs out there this year. Would someone else really overpay for DF with his history of injuries? Here are Fosters numbers from last year: 205 carriers for 879 yards and 2 TDs. For his career he has 4 TDs. You read that right....4. True, he has played behind Stephen Davis when he was healthy - but the reason he was playing BEHIND Davis was because he never turned into the player who was drafted with the 2nd pick in the 2nd round in 2002. He missed the entire 2002 season to an injury. He has played in 33 games in 4 years....missing 31. He averages 4.1 yards a carry. Now, had we just seen his numbers and not heard his name, how much would we say this player was worth? Correct. Nowhere near $14.5 million for 3 years. The Panthers just made a classic FA mistake. They overvalued one of their own players. Even if he plays stellar this year, I feel very strongly that he won't play in 25% of the 48 games he has been signed for.
