Still A. Dog Saturday

So the Dog and his wonderful wife came up from Maryland this weekend so that he could cook a proper meal on my BBQ pit and teach me the nuances of charcoal vs gas grilling. The first thing we did was go to a local German meat market to pick out what we were going to cook. We chose a nice boneless pork loin that was much thicker than what you would find in your local grocery store. It looked like chops that had not been cut yet. We started drinking the Troeg's beer he brought right after lunch. Once we had the meat he rubbed it down with seasoning and put it in the fridge. We then went out in search of his favorite charcoal, Cowboy, but couldn't find any. SAD does not like cooking on briquettes and suggests "real" charcoal. After going to a few places we settled on Home Depot's Char-Broil variety of real charcoal pieces. Last stop was for a pair of cigars to enjoy while cooking, drinking and listening to the Blues.
I learned to put the charcoal on the bottom rack and the food much higher up than I did for my first try (the chicken disaster of 2007). Also, he lets the flame die out before putting the food on. We used 3 stacks of charcoal and the pork cooked for roughly 2.5 hours.

The Dog bought corn local from his neck of the woods and put it on ice. We grilled it on the coals first but as the coals dies down, we moved the corn and the fresh zucchini to the gas grill to finish them up.

The pork was the best I have ever had. Each bite literally melted in your mouth and the garlic cloves that were inserted were delicious. My better half made salad, pasta salad, margaritas and a dessert straight from heaven.....fruit pizza. While I had my corn lightly buttered with salt and pepper - SAD ate his as bare assed as he came into the world. He was enjoying his corn so much I coined a new phrase for him...."corngasm". Everything was perfect. The Dog had some beers and then switched to margaritas. He started adding another shot of Cuervo Gold to every glass. That's why at a little after 9:00 pm, he looked like this:
It was great day. We ate well again this morning as wifey made her famous breakfast casserole and we finished the rest of the fruit pizza. I'm not eating the rest of the day. Well, at least not until the Steeler game comes on and then I might have a pork sandbo. Thanks Dog & Mrs Dog. You are welcome to come back any time you want. Now who is coming out next to cook us a big meal?

Char-Broil charcoal = A. It did just fine and way better than any briquettes.

Fan's Pit = B for functionality. F for aesthitics.

Troegs Sampler = B. I could have replaced the Pale Ale and Dreamweaver Wheat with Sunshine Pils and Nugget Nectar but then what would Fan have had to drink?

Margaritas = as originally served, C. With additional shot of Cuervo, A.

Illgs Meat Market = A. Some fine cuts of meat and a wide range of links (as you might image from a very German establishment).

Pork Loin = A+ This cut of meat was so good it scared me. When you get prime meat this fine and are cooking over open heat you have to work real hard not to screw it up. It is so easy to overcook, undercook, burn (like Fan's chicken) or just drop the damn thing on the patio while turning it. The Grecian Garlic seasoning made it taste like I knew what I was doing.

Cigars (Partagas No. 2s) = D. D is for dry. Partagas No 2s are usually fine cigars but when the beer distributor's humidor is less humid than outside, the smokes had dried out.

Fan's Hospitality = A+. Some of you should take him up on his offer to cook at his house. The sofa is comfortable too!

As for that last picture: Let sleeping dogs lie.
